Check out our work published in applied physics letters on coherent thermal emission from superstructure gratings made from silicon carbide. In brief, when a periodic optical grating is integrated into a material which supports a surface polariton, thermally emitted light beomes highly directional. In our work we alter the properties of the grating using a deterministic sampling method which changes these properties in a controllable way. We also show that our approach breaks down when the propagation length of the surface polariton is shorter than the sampling period.
